Tiger - First Shot

Tiger - First Shot

I had been in the jungle for two days, fourteen years after my first visit to India, and hoping to fulfill my ambition of photographing a tiger in the wild, which I had been unable to do on my first visit for a number of reasons. During the four safaris on the first two days we had employed intensive tracking methods, and came very close, but with no luck. This was my last safari in this national park before moving on to the next one. I was really disappointed when we could find no signs of tigers in the area. The jeep driver had to make a delivery to the rangers compound and we drove on tracks populated with local workers, on foot, travelling to and from the compound. Obviously, there was little chance of spotting a tiger here and we weren't even driving at the pace at which you would normally drive if you were trying to spot the well-camouflaged tigers in the bush. But suddenly, the driver screeched to a halt on the dusty track, and there she was! just feet away from me and looking straight into my face. By the time I took my camera from the plastic bag, protecting it from the dust, she had turned her head and I had missed the best shot, but I had my first shot of a tiger in the wild and I was happy.
