Aya Sofya

Built in the early 15th century as Sancta Sophia, Istanbul's Aya Sofia was known as the greatest church in Christendom (St Peter's in Rome wasn't built until almost one hundred years later). When the islamic Mehmet took Constantinople in May 1453 Sancta Sophia was immediately converted to a mosque.
